Texas: Governor Abbott Refers Discriminatory Airport Religious Facilities To DOJ

TelAve News/10904361
~ In a recent development, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action against discriminatory religious ablution facilities at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The governor has referred these facilities to the U.S. Department of Justice for investigation and enforcement.

According to Governor Abbott, these ablution stations specifically cater to the Muslim population and do not serve as interfaith chapels open to all. He believes that government-owned airports should not favor one religion over others.

In a letter addressed to the Department of Justice, Governor Abbott has called for an immediate review of these discriminatory facilities and appropriate corrective action. As federal funds are involved in the operation of these airports, they are required to comply with all applicable laws prohibiting discrimination and protecting the rights of all Americans.

Both DFW and IAH are government-owned facilities, which prompted Governor Abbott to refer them to U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for investigation last week. Following this referral, DFW has decided against installing additional ablution facilities for Islamic wudu washing rituals. However, two such stations are already in operation at DFW. Similarly, IAH has already installed one ablution facility and a prayer room equipped with copies of the Quran, prayer rugs, prayer beads, and a turbah.

Governor Abbott's letter can be read in its entirety on his official website. This move by the governor highlights his commitment towards ensuring equal treatment for all individuals regardless of their religious beliefs at government-owned facilities like airports.
