Thrifty Senior Traveler Compares Ways to Avoid Costly Single Supplements
TelAve News/10905458
LOS ANGELES - TelAve -- More Americans are traveling internationally on their own, but solo travelers can face a significant financial penalty when tour operators add single supplement charges to the price of a trip.
The Thrifty Senior Traveler, an online resource for travelers age 60-plus, has researched how major tour companies are addressing the growing demand for solo travel and has published a comparison of eight tour operators and their single-traveler programs.
"Around 60 percent of men and women who travel internationally have done so on their own," says Thrifty Senior Traveler founder Jesse Slome. "Some travel solo because they are widowed, divorced or never married. Many who are married choose to travel independently because their spouse isn't interested in the destination, has different activity preferences, or faces mobility constraints."
For older travelers, the decision to travel solo isn't necessarily about wanting to be alone. It can simply be about not allowing someone else's circumstances to prevent them from seeing the world.

The financial issue, however, can be substantial.
"The single supplement charge can add thousands of dollars to the cost of an international trip," Slome says. "That's money that can make the difference between taking a trip and deciding it's simply too expensive."
Recognizing the growth of solo travel, an increasing number of tour companies now offer programs designed to reduce or eliminate single supplement charges. But the programs vary considerably.
"Some companies are highly committed to serving solo travelers," Slome explains. "Others have worthwhile programs that can reduce the cost for travelers who are willing to share a room or who can travel on specific dates."
The Thrifty Senior Traveler comparison examines eight leading tour operators and identifies the advantages and disadvantages of each company's approach to solo travel. The comparison also points out where travelers may be able to avoid or reduce single supplement costs.
The research is particularly relevant to travelers over 60, for whom destination selection can be influenced by considerations such as personal safety, ease of transportation, healthcare access and opportunities for meaningful cultural or natural experiences.
