Boston: Council Approves Grants Supporting Resiliency, Public Safety, and Youth Employment
TelAve News/10862415
~ In a recent Council meeting, several major grants were approved and accepted with the goal of improving climate resilience, public safety, and youth workforce development. The Council unanimously approved a $1,987,500 Hazard Mitigation Grant, which will be administered by the Boston Planning Department. This grant will specifically target flood risks in East Boston and support the East Boston Waterfront–Carlton Wharf and Lewis Mall Resiliency Project. The project is expected to unlock an additional $15 million for construction, providing much-needed protection for residents against displacement caused by climate-related flooding.
Additionally, the Council accepted a $58,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the FY19 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Program. This grant will be administered by the Boston Fire Department and will go towards fire prevention education, training, fire code enforcement, and health and safety initiatives. These efforts are aimed at protecting both first responders and the public from fire-related hazards.

The Council also accepted a generous $4,149,200 grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development to support the YouthWorks Program. Managed by the Mayor's Office of Workforce Development, this funding will provide summer and school-year employment opportunities to over 1,000 low-income and at-risk youth between the ages of 14 to 25. Through partnerships with local organizations in industries such as biotechnology, education, and public service, participants will gain valuable career experience.
These grants demonstrate a commitment from both local and federal agencies to address important issues such as climate change resilience, public safety measures, and youth workforce development in Boston. The Council's approval of these grants is a significant step towards creating a safer and more prosperous community for all residents.
