Colorado: Governor Polis: Green Light on Rescheduling Cannabis is Smart Policy, Long Overdue
TelAve News/10884080
DENVER ~ In a long-awaited move, the Trump Administration has announced its intention to reschedule cannabis. This decision comes after years of efforts from various administrations to bring the nation to this point.
Governor Jared Polis of Colorado, a vocal advocate for federal cannabis reform for over 15 years and co-founder of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, expressed his gratitude towards the President for taking this step. He stated that it was high time for the federal government to catch up with states like Colorado and eliminate outdated policies that hinder small businesses and compromise public safety.
The Governor highlighted Colorado's success in implementing smart and safe cannabis policies, which have effectively eliminated illegal markets, ensured safe use, and generated over a billion dollars for education. He also praised the state's cannabis industry as the "gold standard" for ensuring product safety and regulation.
While Governor Polis is pleased with this development, he also expressed frustration that it has taken so long for the federal government to follow suit. He believes there is still much more work to be done towards full descheduling of cannabis.

The Governor's efforts towards federal cannabis reform have been ongoing. In 2021, he called upon Congressional leaders to pass the Safe Banking Act and led an effort with 21 other Governors to encourage Congress to pass SAFE Banking Amendments. Later that year, he also urged then-President Biden's FDA to reschedule cannabis in order to support law-abiding businesses in Colorado.
In September of 2024, Governor Polis requested that Colorado appear as a witness in the matter of Rescheduling Marijuana. This further demonstrates his commitment towards achieving meaningful change at the federal level.
Governor Polis has also taken executive action in support of cannabis reform within his own state. In 2020, he pardoned 2,732 Coloradans who had previous marijuana possession convictions of one ounce or less. The following year, he signed a law increasing the legal possession limit for adults from one ounce to two ounces and granted an additional 1,351 pardons for convictions of possession of two ounces or less.
With the Trump Administration's announcement, it is clear that the tide is turning towards more progressive cannabis policies at the federal level. Governor Polis and other advocates will continue to push for further reforms to ensure a fair and just approach towards cannabis in the United States.
