(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Responds to Three Structure Fires in Three Days

Over the course of three days, the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) has responded to three separate structure fires in the city. The first incident occurred on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 12:01 p.m. in the 1600 block of Mores Boulevard. Multiple 911 calls were received reporting a fire in the woods or a large amount of smoke in the area, but the source could not be identified.

CFD units arrived within four minutes to find a heavily wooded area with what appeared to be an abandoned barn fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive attack and were able to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes, preventing it from spreading into the surrounding wildland urban interface. A total of five units and 19 personnel were dispatched to the scene and remained for approximately two hours.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this incident. After completing their investigation, Columbia Fire Marshals have determined that the cause of the fire is undetermined.

The following day, on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 12:38 p.m., CFD units responded to a commercial structure fire in the 2500 block of West Worley Street. A chief officer who was in the area recognized signs of fire and located a working commercial structure fire at a large storage facility on West Worley Street.

Units arrived within two minutes to find smoke throughout the complex and forced entry into a heavily involved storage building measuring 120 feet byfoot. The incident was upgraded to a second alarm, bringing eight fire companies and 34 personnel to the scene.

Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive attack using over a thousand feet of supply hose from hydrants and several hundred feet of attack hose from fire engines. They were able to bring the fire under control within 45 minutes of dispatch.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported from this incident and CFD was able to save over 50% of the structure and its contents. Crews remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul and fully extinguishing the contents of the affected units. Public Works was also called in to assist with removing contents from the units.

The cause of this fire is currently under investigation by the Columbia Police Department.

The third incident occurred on Monday, Dec. 8 at 4:22 a.m. in the 1400 block of West Worley Street. CFD units were dispatched to a residential structure fire and arrived within three minutes to find heavy smoke coming from the eaves of a single-story home. Firefighters quickly entered the home and were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes.

One person was evaluated on scene but did not require medical care or transport. The Columbia Fire Marshals have determined that the cause of this fire was an accidental electrical fire.

In light of these recent incidents, the Columbia Fire Department is reminding residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. Smoke alarms should be placed on every level of a home, including outside sleeping areas, and should be tested monthly and have their batteries changed at least twice a year.

Residents are also reminded to replace any smoke alarm that is over 10 years old. These simple steps can help save lives in case of a fire emergency.
