Governor Abbott Announces Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund Grant To Texas Quantum Institute
TelAve News/10883345
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF) has granted $4.8 million to the Texas Quantum Institute (TQI) at The University of Texas (UT) at Austin. This grant will be used to establish QLab, a quantum-enhanced semiconductor metrology facility in Austin.
Governor Abbott expressed his excitement about this development, stating that "Texas is the new frontier of innovation and UT Austin is where world-changing discoveries in quantum research and development are being made." He believes that through this grant, QLab will be able to acquire state-of-the-art instrumentation that will advance semiconductor manufacturing in Texas by utilizing new developments in quantum science and technology. He also emphasized that Texas will continue to lead the nation with "quantum leaps into the future."
The QLab metrology facility will not only serve the Texas semiconductor industry but also support academic research and emerging quantum industries. Metrology, which involves measuring materials at the atomic and molecular level, is crucial in semiconductor manufacturing. QLab will be managed by TQI in collaboration with UT Austin's Microelectronic Research Center (MRC), Texas Institute for Electronics (TIE), and Texas Materials Institute (TMI).

Elaine Li, co-director of TQI, expressed her gratitude for the support from both the State of Texas and UT Austin. She stated that "metrology has been identified by the U.S. Department of Commerce as the key enabling technology for the semiconductor industry" and this investment from TSIF will allow UT Austin to advance metrology tools to address critical challenges in this industry.
Xiuling Li, co-director of TQI, also shared her excitement about this investment, stating that it gives them "tremendous momentum" to drive breakthroughs in quantum-enhanced semiconductor metrology. She believes that this will shape the future of both the semiconductor and quantum industries.
Senator Sarah Eckhardt also weighed in on this development, highlighting the innovative work of faculty and researchers at UT Austin that has made Central Texas a national hub for semiconductor innovation. She believes that QLab will play a crucial role in positioning the region to capitalize on growth in the semiconductor and quantum industries, including the creation of high-paying advanced manufacturing jobs.
