Free legal clinic to help seniors facing legal and financial challenges after recent storms

FORT MYERS, Fla. - TelAve -- Lee County Legal Aid Society will host its next free legal clinic for seniors on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Attorneys from the Legal Aid Society will host Law at Beacon of Hope, sponsored by the AARP Foundation, for area seniors in need of no-cost, limited legal advice in civil cases, including issues stemming from Hurricane Ian in 2022 and compounded by Milton in 2024.

"So many seniors are still navigating complicated legal and financial challenges years after Ian and now Milton," said Andrew Banyai, executive director of the Lee County Legal Aid Society. "These clinics are designed to remove barriers, provide clarity and make sure people aren't left to face these issues alone."

The upcoming session takes place at Beacon of Hope Pine Island, located at 5090 Doug Taylor Circle, in St. James City, Fla., from 9 a.m. to noon and is open to Lee County residents ages 50 and older.

The event will feature a free legal Q&A session, where attorneys will be available to answer questions with a special focus on hurricane-related issues such as insurance claims, housing and recovery resources.

While participation is free and walk-ins are welcome, registration is recommended. To register, please email Nanci@leecountylegalaid.org with contact information and a brief description of the legal advice being sought. Any relevant documents should be brought to the clinic. Those in attendance will also be welcome to giveaways provided by the Legal Aid Society, including pens, flash drives and cups.

Unlike in criminal law, there is no constitutional right to counsel in civil law, which includes landlord-tenant disputes, foreclosures, evictions, probate, debt collection, child custody cases, domestic violence orders of protection and more. Lee County Legal Aid Society provides free legal counsel for these types of civil cases for residents of Lee County who qualify.
