BRONX, N.Y. - TelAve -- The idea didn't arrive in a meeting or a business plan. It arrived on an ordinary afternoon, while Maddox sat on the front stoop of her Morris Park home wondering how she was going to pay her rent.

After fifteen years as a New York City public school teacher, she wanted to find a way to remain an educator, pay her bills, while also being present for her own two young children.

She looked up just as one of her former students walked down the block.

"Ahmed!" she called.

He smiled, turned around, and walked over.

The two caught up for a few minutes. Maddox told him about an idea she had to teach Yemeni women and girls from home.

He listened before saying something simple.

"Maybe my mom and sister would like it."

It wasn't a business plan.

It was an invitation.

Within days, conversations spread through the Yemeni community she had come to know during her years teaching in the Bronx. Mothers reached out. Sisters reached out. Friends told friends. One conversation on a neighborhood sidewalk became a women-only English program taught online from her dining room table.

Today, the classes focus on practical English: speaking with teachers, making doctor's appointments, navigating parent-teacher conferences, and advocating for themselves and their children.

"I've realized that language is freedom," Maddox said. "When a mother can walk into her child's school and understand what's happening, she has power."

As the classes grew, so did another idea.

The backyard behind her home—filled with vegetables, fruit trees, chickens, and rabbits—began transforming into Haight Ave Educational Farm and Market, a women-and-children-focused educational space where families can garden, practice English, attend seasonal events, and eventually support local vendors.

The project grew from relationships within the Yemeni community but welcomes families from every background in one of the Bronx's most diverse neighborhoods, where Yemeni, Italian, Albanian, Bangladeshi, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, and many other communities live side by side.

She has begun conversations with members of Bronx Community Board 11 and hopes to build future partnerships with organizations including the Bronx Muslim Center and the Yemeni Business Association.

"It has been restorative," she said. "I never imagined that sitting on my front stoop and talking with one former student would lead me here. The women have trusted me with one of the most vulnerable parts of their lives—finding their voice in a new language. That's something I'll never take for granted."
