Updated Biogas CHP Guide Explains SCR Systems for NOx Emissions Control
TelAve News/10905976
Anaerobic-Digestion.com updates its technical guidance on biogas CHP emissions as operators face increasing demands to improve engine efficiency and control NOx emissions.
SHREWSBURY, U.K. - TelAve -- Anaerobic-Digestion.com has published substantially revised technical guidance on emissions from biogas combined heat and power (CHP) engines, focusing on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for controlling nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
The updated guide, "Biogas CHP Emissions: SCR Systems for NOx Control in Gas Engines," has been rewritten specifically for stationary gas engines operating on biogas produced by anaerobic digestion plants.
Biogas CHP has played an important role in the growth of anaerobic digestion. By generating electricity while recovering useful engine heat, CHP can utilise considerably more of the energy contained in biogas than electricity generation without effective heat recovery.
However, combustion of biogas in reciprocating gas engines also produces emissions that must be properly controlled. Nitrogen oxides are among the most important.

The revised guide explains the role of SCR technology in reducing NOx emissions from biogas engine exhausts and discusses practical considerations when applying the technology to CHP installations.
The updated technical guide is available at:
https://blog.anaerobic-digestion.com/first-combined-heat-and-power-plants-with-scr/
WHY THE GUIDE WAS UPDATED
The previous article contained more general information about SCR, including applications outside the stationary biogas-engine sector. Less relevant material has now been removed and the guide refocused on biogas engines, emissions control and practical application of SCR technology.
A real-world SCR installation involving biogas engines in Duisburg, Germany is retained as an example of the technology in operation.
"Biogas CHP is a mature technology, but that does not mean the technical information surrounding it should remain frozen in time," said Steve Last, editor of Anaerobic-Digestion.com and Principal of IPPTS Associates.

"Operators increasingly need to consider engine efficiency, useful heat recovery, emissions and the best overall use of the biogas they produce. This update turns an older article into a much more focused technical resource for people working with biogas-fuelled CHP engines."
BUILDING AN ANAEROBIC DIGESTION TECHNICAL REFERENCE
The revision forms part of a wider programme to develop Anaerobic-Digestion.com as an evergreen technical reference explaining how anaerobic digestion and biogas systems work.
The website covers anaerobic digestion processes, feedstocks, biogas production, CHP systems, gas engines, biomethane upgrading, digestate and plant operation.
It is edited by Steve Last, a Chartered Civil & Environmental Engineer (MICE), Chartered Waste Manager (MCIWM) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), drawing on more than 30 years of professional experience in waste management and environmental engineering.
