Boston: Council Supports Question 6 to Create Natural Resource Conservation Fund

TelAve News/10908918
~ The Council has adopted a resolution supporting Question 6, a statewide ballot measure that would establish a dedicated fund for natural resource conservation and outdoor recreation.

The measure is scheduled to appear on the November 3, 2026, ballot. It would direct up to $100 million annually from existing sales tax revenue on purchases including camping gear, golf clubs and fishing equipment, without raising taxes, according to the resolution.

The proposed Nature for All Fund would support land conservation and recreation projects across the Commonwealth. If approved, it could begin receiving 50 percent of the applicable tax revenue on July 1, 2027, and the full amount beginning July 1, 2028. A board comprising state officials and members of the public would allocate funding to eligible projects.

The resolution says stable, long-term funding could help protect forests, rivers, wildlife habitats, parks and recreational lands, while supporting community conservation and climate resilience planning. It also cites the role of parks, trails and greenspace in residents' well-being and public health.

The Commonwealth manages more public parkland in Boston than the city does, including the Charles River Esplanade, Stony Brook Reservation and Southwest Corridor Park, the resolution notes. It also points to undeveloped land as an opportunity to expand public access to outdoor recreation.

The Council's resolution highlights Boston's efforts to strengthen climate resilience, conserve natural resources and expand access to greenspace and recreation, particularly in low-income communities and communities of color.
