California secures federal assistance to support response to Norte Fire in Orange County
TelAve News/10909387
~ California has secured a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to help pay for firefighting costs as crews respond to the Norte Fire in Orange County, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Oct. 16.
The fire ignited shortly after 11:30 a.m. in the San Clemente area, south of San Juan Capistrano. It had burned about 465 acres and threatened nearly 13,000 people, according to the governor's office. Evacuation orders and warnings were issued for 4,000 homes.
The Fire Management Assistance Grant allows eligible local, state and tribal agencies to seek reimbursement for 75% of qualifying suppression costs, the announcement said.
Newsom said the federal assistance would provide resources to help firefighters protect lives and property. The fire was fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, dry vegetation and elevated temperatures, according to the release, which described Southern California as experiencing a significant wind event with low humidity and elevated to critical fire-weather conditions.

Ahead of the fire-weather concerns, Newsom directed the California Office of Emergency Services to send additional resources to Orange County on Oct. 15, including five fire engines, a bulldozer, a water tender, a helicopter and 45 firefighters and support personnel.
The Cal OES State Operations Center was also activated to coordinate statewide resources and support local governments responding to fire-weather conditions and potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs, the release said.
Residents were urged to follow local officials' guidance, sign up for emergency alerts and prepare evacuation plans and go-bags. The state also advised securing loose outdoor items ahead of high winds and contacting utility providers for information about possible power shutoffs.
